Finding a movie to watch with my wife is usually a highly strategic task with a vast array of factors to take into consideration.
Most high octane action-thrillers and films with gratuitous violence are straight out and I’m quick to veto anything vaguely resembling a romcom. However we both recently enjoyed watching the 2009 Academy Award nominated sports drama, The Blind Side. The film is based on the true life story of American Football player Michael Oher and is dominated by an utterly compelling performance from Sandra Bullock, who picked up an Oscar for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Touhy. The film manages to combine a number of hard-hitting issues such as racism, drug abuse and poverty with some cracking sports action and is definitely a feel good family story.

The sport of boxing has held reasonable interest for me since I was a child and I certainly remember with relish some of the great fights of the 1990’s including the all British Benn v Eubank affair in 1990, the brutal Benn v McClellan clash in 1995 and the memorable Tyson v Holyfield bout in 1996.
This is one of the worst looking hits I’ve seen for quite sometime. Counties Manukau player Fritz Lee gets his timing all wrong and almost takes Luke Hamilton’s head off with a very high tackle! Not sure it was intentional but the scrum half certainly felt the full force of his arm!
As ever, the seemingly infinitesimal football close season has seen England’s biggest clubs do battle for some of the world’s best and most expensive players. Records are smashed on a yearly basis as clubs splash the cash on both established and up and coming players in the hope that the signings will transform their title and cup prospects.
In the light of the extraordinary scenes at Trent Bridge on Sunday when England cricketer Ian Bell was run out and later reinstated, it got me thinking about other great moments of sportsmanship and decisions made in the ‘spirit of the game’.
Wayne Rooney’s four letter outburst into a television camera following his hat trick at West Ham on Saturday was unsavoury to say the least.
After the incredible Nike World Cup advert of last summer, sports brand rivals Adidas have launched their new marketing campaign today. Billed as the ‘biggest ever’, it features a immense array of sports and music stars ranging from Lionel Messi, Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose and ‘I kissed a girl’ star Katy Perry.
With the Six Nations set to kick off on Friday with England taking on Wales in Cardiff, I thought it would be a good idea to think back to some of my favourite moments from watching the illustrious tournament. I’ve come up with six of the best moments and tries I can remember, however I’m sure that it’s not an exhaustive list. Please add your own memories below.
On Sunday evening I had the pleasure of watching Sports Personality of the Year 2010 with my wife and was genuinely delighted for Tony McCoy, who picked up the award having finally got his hands on the Grand National trophy in 2010.
After watching (through gritted teeth) Spurs finish top of their Champions League group last night, I reflected on one of the all time great goalkeeping blunders by FC Twente goalkeeper Sander Boschker.
